Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia is an actor and comedian. Chieng
is currently a senior correspondent for The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He
also developed and is the star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International
Student, which debuted on ABC Australia (Australia) in the year 2017. Chieng
was born to a Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). From 1989 to
1994, he resided in Manchester in New Hampshire. Chieng performed with Trevor
Noah in 2013 at the comedy festival in Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was then
asked to audition for the role as a correspondent for Noah's Daily Show two
years after. Chieng was selected as one of the 10 Comics to Watch in the July
issue of Variety. In October, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss a Jesse
Watters Fox News segment that was widely viewed as racist. Chieng made
expletive-laden comments regarding the segment on Fox News, a conservative
network. He also visited New York City's Chinatown where Watters ridiculed
residents. The viral video was covered by the Washington Post, Slate, as well
as other media publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout in his early
years. Chieng hasn't managed to obtain citizenship or permanent residency
status in Australia despite having lived in Australia for ten years. Chieng
laughed in 2018 when he said he was cynophobic, but later stated that he is
completely unafraid of dogs.
